Equity Matters at Carleton
We are the academic staff of Carleton University and we are diverse. We represent a wide range of races, genders and sexualities. We live with a variety of disabilities. We are proud of our diversity and feel that it should be respected.
A recent survey by the Carleton University Academic Staff Association showed that 35%* of Carleton's academic staff have been affected by an equity issue while at work. These issues range from a chilly climate (which isn't necessarily a form of harassment and can have many causes) to direct harassment. Equity issues can originate anywhere, in relations with coworkers, with administrators or with students.
Dealing with equity issues is stressful and emotionally taxing. It also means that we have to take time away from our work - work that is vital to the operation of the University - to address these issues. When our ability to do our jobs is diminished because of harassment in the workplace, the University suffers.
More than that though, it's our students who suffer when equity issues make it impossible for us to return assignments on time or to give them the attention they deserve. After all, our working conditions are their learning con ditions.
We feel that it's time to make a change and that's why we're proud to present "Equity Matters", a campaign developed by the CUASA Equity Committee.
This campaign is by no means a complete representation of the diverse nature of the academic staff at Carleton, but it strives to address the most common issues that arise. Equity issues can happen almost anywhere, to anyone.
